JOB OPPORTUNITY

WRc requires a freshwater quality and catchment management specialist to join a team engaged in research and consultancy work for a wide range of UK and overseas clients, including the Environment Agency (England and Wales), the European Environment Agency, the Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the European Commission (DG Environment).

Candidates should have:

• A first degree in a biological or environmental discipline.
• At least 5 years' postgraduate experience in the areas of freshwater quality, hydrology and catchment management.
• Good analytical and presentational skills, and fluent use of word processing and spreadsheet packages.

Particular experience of the following would be advantageous:

• Knowledge of implementing European legislation at the national level, especially the WFD.
• Catchment management planning.
• Ecological assessment of surface freshwater bodies.
• Diffuse source pollution and its control.
• European water quality management practice.
• Overseas work, especially in central and eastern Europe.
• Geographical Information Systems.
• Project management.

The post will involve some travel and periods of work overseas and knowledge of another major European language would be helpful.

The person appointed will be a good team player but also self-reliant and strongly self-motivated. He or she must be capable of leading initiatives when necessary and playing a significant role in developing business in this area.
